Can you get paid to be caregiver for a family member?

brown9148 started this conversation

Things have changed drastically with mom.  She has started having seizures now and can't be left alone at all.  I was doing In-store demo's on a part time basis for a little extra money, but can no longer do that.  And desparately need the extra income to be able to pay my own bills.  I have heard that there is a way to get paid for being a full-time caregiver for a family member.  Anyone know who to contact for that information?

Also, mom get social security, but I was wondering if she could also draw disability?

Hello my mother just found out in December that she had cancer of the mouth. Since that time she has declined rapidly. She has a feeding tube, a power port, a trach(new this week), and has has a full tooth extraction. She needs fed every 4 hours, 3 kinds of meds every 6 hours and one kind of med every 8 hours along with breathing treatments and a humidity machine we got yesterday. I can't work because I am her only child and sole caregiver. I have my rent to pay and other bills as well. She is 60 years old and was just approved yesterday for Medicaid. I was wondering if there is a way I can get paid for being her caregiver so we can stay in my place. If I lose my place she will go to a medical facility and she has panic attacks over that because she is scared of going. I want to keep her with me until the end. They have given her a year at the most. If anyone has any information that would be a huge help. Please help me keep my mom with me and comfortable for as long as I can.

in response to dumbo...   I have seizures and I have disability. If your Mom gets disability she will have to file for someone to help her from the disability office. There is a website for that.

I did not see anythng where is specifically says they will pay you to take care of your Mother. You do need to contact your State to see if they have some programs that can help you with getting your resources met. Also, going to a church is helpful too. I used to my utilities paid from churches. I am sorry to hear about your Moms issues. I have epilepsy and I certainly understand how difficult it can be.

in response to lalost...   reply to lalost:---Well it sounds good so far, does she have a case worker? She should have one hopefully through medicare. Anyway call both offices and have them send you any and all the info they have on home care reembursement for the disabled. If your lucky you may even get to talk to someone that knows what you do next. You have to make out a caregivers app and I believe you have to take a 6 hour course on what to do in case of emergencys. Actually, the requirements aren't all that bad and the state saves a lot of money by keeping our loved ones in their homes and the fact that you will have to quit your job is a big plus. I wish you all the luck in the world and I think what your doing for your loved one is wonderful. If I can be of any more help let me know. sincerely sheshe030

Programs & Services

The effects of MS vary widely from one individual to another. Symptoms for some may come and go, while others may experience a steady worsening of their disease. Each person's specific symptoms vary greatly too. For example, one may have visual problems, numbness, and fatigue, while another may experience impaired mobility, weakness, and depression.

With so many variables, the needs of the MS population are diverse. For this reason, MSAA offers five categories of programs and services aimed at providing individualized assistance to people with MS, their families, and their care partners.
Offering Lifelines

The physical symptoms of MS often have a strong emotional impact. Individuals with MS may feel uncertain about the future and frustrated over the challenges MS may present; loneliness and depression are very common as well. Encouragement and understanding are key to helping an individual get back on track, while valuable information helps to reduce fear and provide positive direction.

in response to sheshe030...   Thank you for all your information and yes she just moved from Ohio to Dallas with me because she is unable to be alone. I'm going be honest when i first took this all on I wasnt aware that it would be so much responbility until she arrived. i was working fulltime at a hospital Im unable to maintain my fulltime job .Do to working fulltime at home with her. And she do receive medicare and socail security. So i guess my next step should be to contact someone to appply to be her caregiver since she is currently living with me is this correct.

in response to lalost...   Reply to lalost:---I can only speak for the state I live in (Washington) but if your loved one is eligible for medicare/medicaid and or is on social security you can apply to be her caretaker. They will come to your home and make sure she has access to the bathroom and has any equipment she may need for mobility like a walker and or a wheelchair etc.You would have to be available to care for her full time or you could inquire about someone coming in for an evening or one day a week to give you a break. They will probably want you to live in the same home as that is the whole point of being a caregiver and that is to be there to help her with any and all needs she may have. They also provide transportation for her to and from her Dr appointments but you will also have to apply for that as well. To find out if this is available to you you should first establish if she is on medicare/medicaid/social security and you can call your local social security office to find out who to talk to about this. You can also call the Dept of social services and talk to them. Before you do anything you must establish what kind of coverage she has. I hope this has helped you but as I said each state may be different so you should get on the internet or phone and find out what is available where you live. Good luck sincerely sheshe030

I am disabled both mental and physically. I fall down and hurt myself alot. My huband cares for me while he's not at work and even calls in on my bad days. He makes less than $ 10 an hour so even one day off hurts us badly since you all know that disability doesn't pay well. Is there any way he can recieve any compensation for being my primary caretaker ? Thank you for you reading this.
